Roof Storm Damage

We can assist you in filing a claim with your insurance company!

Blue Square Builders will help our homeowners through the process of inspecting the roof, filing a claim, and re-roofing their homes.

If you were in the path of recent storms, here's what you can expect to happen if you call Blue Square Builders for help with any roof damage:

  1. Your Blue Square Builders representative will perform a 10-point inspection and documentation on your roof and surrounding areas of your home.
  2. If damage is found, it will be suggested that you file a claim with your homeowner's insurance company for damage.
  3. Once a claim is filed, you will set an appointment for an insurance adjuster to come inspect your roof for the damage.
  4. Your Blue Square Builders representative will be at the adjuster's meeting to make sure all damage found at the previous inspection is pointed out.
  5. If the adjuster approves the claim and pays for roof replacement, your adjuster will give you their estimate and first check for your new roof replacement.
  6. Your Blue Square Builders representative will go over the estimate with you, discussing your options for replacement products and sign a contract with you.
  7. Once the contract is signed with product and color choices and the first check has arrived, we will order product materials. Blue Square Builders will schedule and install your new roof before the 2nd check (the remainder of the claim amount) arrives. You will owe us the remainder of the balance once your new roof is completed. We will submit to you a "Paid In Full Receipt" that you will send to your insurance company and they will release the remainder of the funds to you.
  8. When the materials are delivered, one of our professional roofing crews will install your new roof system. This can take 1 day or 4 days, depending on the size of the roof. Your Blue Square Builders representative will be there to answer any questions or concerns.
  9. Once the job is done, we will send you and your insurance company a final invoice stating that all work per the insurance estimate was completed.
  10. Your insurance company will send you the 2nd check (usually the remainder of the claim amount) within a week or so.

Stay prepared for sudden changes in the forecast with your local experts. We have 25 years of hands-on experience fixing shingles, flashing, caulking, and more.

Hail Damage Roof Facts

  1. Hail and wind CAN damage your roof. It is not visible from the ground. We will be able to document any damage with photos and show it to you after the inspection.
  2. It is important to have your roof inspected by a "LOCAL" reputable, professional roofing contractor before you contact your insurance company.
  3. Make sure to choose your roofing contractor very carefully! (There are many out of State "Roofing Storm Chasers" that cause issues in situations like this.
  4. The roofing contractor should have knowledge in dealing with insurance claim work.
  5. Your roofing contractor will give you a professional opinion on whether to file a claim or not.
  6. If you file a claim, your insurance claim adjuster will call you to set up an appointment for a roof inspection.
  7. Let your roofing contractor know when the meeting is so that the contractor can meet with the adjuster to explain the damage found.

Your adjuster will either approve or deny your claim. Filing a claim comes at NO COST to you. Your insurance premium will not be raised, even if damage is found. This is because hail and wind damage are considered Acts of God/Nature, and therefore come from no fault of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions Below

What does hail do to a roof?

Shingles are designed so that the granules block the UV of the sun and protect the asphalt underlayment. As the shingles age the granules fall off over time. As the asphalt is exposed to UV, it dries out and the shingle gets a "potato chip" appearance as the corners start to curl up. A shingle at the extreme end of its life is bubbled in appearance and is brittle to the touch. A 20-year shingle is warranted by the manufacturer to have a useful life, under optimal ventilation conditions, of 20 years. Hail does several things.

Do I need to get my roof replaced right away?

The insidious nature of hail damage is that it may pose no immediate threat to the structural integrity of the roof. However, many insurance companies have a "statute of limitations" of how long a hail claim is viable. If you have experienced a loss such as hail damage it is prudent to take care of the problem in a timely manner before it leads to other associated problems.

What does a hail hit look like?

A hail hit on a shingle looks like a “bruise” or a dark spot where the granules on the shingle have been knocked off and the asphalt underlayment and sometimes the fiberglass mat is exposed. New hail hits will have a shiny appearance because the asphalt has been freshly exposed and has not had time to weather to a dull color.

Why would my insurance company replace my roof?

The purpose of homeowner's insurance is to protect homeowners against losses in their property's value due to damage that is beyond their control. If you have hail damage, you have experienced a financial loss in that your original investment of a 20-year roof (for example) has now been reduced to a 5-10 year useful life span. Your insurance company will compensate you for your loss and replace your roof.

Why does the estimate read that there are more shingles to replace then there are to remove?

The amount of shingles to remove from your roof is the actual amount of square feet that it takes to shingle your roof. However, when putting on shingles, some shingles have to be cut to fit dimensions, ridges, hips and valleys. The insurance company adds 10% to regular ridge roofs and 15% to hip and ridge roofs to account for the loss of shingles.

In my adjustment, my insurance company deducted some money for depreciation, what is that all about?

Different insurance companies call the amount that they hold back different things. Some call it depreciation; other companies figure it in as a dump and removal fee. What it represents is the amount of money the company will hold back until they receive a signed contract from you and a contractor for the work. When they receive a signed contract, you will receive another check for the amount they have held back.
